Reasons To Hire An Electrician Vs. Handyman for Electrical Repairs.

If your Lakeland home or business is in need of electrical repairs, you will need a licensed electrical contractor.  Electrical work in Central Florida must be done to code; it is highly unlikely that a handyman is familiar with state and Polk County regulations regarding wiring.  Here are some additional reasons why you should use a licensed and certified electrician.

Experience and Training.

A handyman (or handywoman) may be skilled at a variety of things. Repairs to windows, doors, woodwork, shelves, cabinets, are some of the things that a handyman can do. What a handyman should not do is repair anything to do with the flow of electricity to and inside your home or office. Electrical repairs such as replacing a fuse box or replacing old wiring should be done by a licensed electrician. Why? An electrician must be licensed before they can be called an electrician. In order to obtain a license, a finite number of training hours must be achieved. The training not only instructs an electrician in how electrical apparatus should be properly installed, but it also gives them hands-on experience as well. An electrician will know what the differences between a commercial and residential project are; there will be code mandated differences between the two. Commercial wiring typically carries a heavier load than does residential wiring. Installing the wrong wiring, circuit breaker, fuses’, etc. in an office can result in an electrical fire.

To undertake certain types of electrical repairs specialized tools may be required to fix an electrical problem. Electricians are familiar with what tools are needed for a given electrical repair and know because of experience and multiple hours of education. A repair on a piece of electrical equipment can quickly become a replacement if the wrong tools are used.

More Expensive.

Because a handyman does not have the requisite training an electrician has, it may take more hours for them to complete the repair. There may be trips back and forth to a hardware store while a handyman tries to figure out what the correct materials for an electrical repair are. All those hours a handyman burns trying to understand what is required to make an electrical repair can add up and become expensive. An electrician will arrive with the needed materials in hand to quickly and efficiently complete the repair on the first try.
